Biographies

Biographies of Madison range from the sweeping and detailed six-volume Life of James Madison by Irving Brant (Indianapolis, 1941-61) to the brief but excellent study by Jack Rakove, James Madison and the Creation of the American Republic (Glenview, Ill., 1990).

The best one-volume biography is by Ralph Ketcham, James Madison: A Biography (1971; reprint, Charlottesville, Va., 1990).

Robert A. Rutland's James Madison: The Founding Father (New York, 1987) is a short and very readable work.

Some of the many more recent works include:

  • Richard Brookhiser, James Madison (New York, 2011)
  • Jeff Broadwater, James Madison: A Son of Virginia and a Founder of the Nation (Chapel Hill, 2012).
  • Lynne Cheney, James Madison: A Life Reconsidered (New York, 2014)
  • Noah Feldman, The Three Lives of James Madison (New York, 2017)
  • Kevin R. C. Gutzman, James Madison and the Making of America (New York, 2012)
  • Jack Signer, Becoming Madison: The Extraordinary Origins of the Least Likely Founding Father (New York, 2015)
